2025 Recruitment Announcement for Teaching and Research Positions in the Department of Sociology at Peking University
1. About Our Department
The Department of Sociology at Peking University has its roots in the early 20th century, with the inaugural sociology course offered in 1916. In 1922, the department's establishment at Yenching University positioned it as a frontrunner in graduate sociology education in China. The revival and reconstruction of the sociology major and master's program in 1980 were made possible by the contributions of distinguished scholars such as Fei Xiaotong and Lei Jieqiong. The department began to admit undergraduate students in 1983 and was awarded the nation's first doctoral degree authorization in sociology in 1985. It now offers three master's programs: Academic Master of Sociology, Professional Master of Social Work, and Professional Master of Social Policy.
Since 2007, the Ministry of Education has designated sociology at Peking University as a National Key Discipline. Our department incorporates a diverse array of sub-fields, such as theoretical sociology, applied sociology, anthropology, demography, folkloristics, social work, social policy, and women's studies. The department is home to a research base for the Ministry of Education's humanities and social sciences initiatives, a nationally recognized "Research Base on the Chinese Nation Community" endorsed by four state ministries, two postdoctoral research stations, and twelve specialized research centers. Additionally, it acts as the secretariat for prestigious national-level associations, including the "Chinese Association for Social Work Education" and the "National Steering Committee for Professional Master’s Degree Education in Social Work".
Committed to upholding traditions while nurturing innovation, our department engages with practical applications and remains deeply rooted in the Chinese context. The department's educational philosophy emphasizes a harmonious balance between foundational and professional disciplines, theoretical exploration and empirical research, and the cultivation of both humanistic literacy and a rigorous scientific spirit.
